850 Million Downloads, $750 Million in IAP

Short drama apps passed 850 million worldwide downloads in Q1 2026, up 140% from a year earlier, according to Sensor Tower's State of Short Drama Apps 2026 report. Global in-app purchase revenue reached roughly $750 million, an increase of 20% year over year. Together, those numbers show a category still expanding rapidly even as revenue growth becomes more measured than download growth.

The scope matters: these are Sensor Tower estimates for the App Store and Google Play. They exclude advertising, web checkout, and third-party Android stores, so the $750 million figure is a comparable measure of mobile IAP—not a claim about the entire short drama economy or total company revenue.

FreeReels and NetShort Reset the Download Race

The fastest movement came from challengers. FreeReels became the most-downloaded short drama app in Q1, passing 100 million installs and growing 123% quarter over quarter. NetShort's downloads jumped 196% quarter over quarter, lifting it to third place in the global download ranking.

Revenue remains more concentrated. DramaBox and ReelShort each approached $140 million in Q1 IAP, making them the two clear revenue leaders but leaving about $470 million across the rest of the category. The takeaway is not winner-takes-all: established apps retain monetization strength while a new group is acquiring users at exceptional speed.

Engagement and Growth Shift Toward Emerging Markets

Sensor Tower reports that users spent nearly six times as much total time in short drama apps as they did a year earlier. By April 2026, average daily usage reached 25 minutes globally—85% above January 2025—and approached 40 minutes in Southeast Asia.

The geographic mix is changing with that engagement. Southeast Asia supplied 32% of Q1 downloads, Latin America 23%, and India 22%; together they represented more than three quarters of global installs. For publishers, creators, and affiliates, the practical opportunity is increasingly multilingual: localization, regional pricing, and market-specific creative are becoming as important as the underlying show catalog.
